Fuel Economy Conversion Guide

Fuel economy is measured differently around the world. The United States uses miles per gallon (mpg) with the US gallon. The UK also uses mpg but with the larger imperial gallon. Most of Europe and Asia uses liters per 100 kilometers (L/100km). Some countries also use kilometers per liter (km/L).

An important note: higher mpg means better fuel economy, but higher L/100km means worse fuel economy (you're using more fuel per distance). A car that gets 30 US mpg uses approximately 7.84 L/100km. A car that gets 50 US mpg uses approximately 4.70 L/100km. European cars rated at 6 L/100km get approximately 39.2 US mpg.

US vs. UK MPG

Because the US gallon (3.785 L) is smaller than the UK imperial gallon (4.546 L), UK mpg figures are always higher than US mpg for the same car. A car rated at 40 UK mpg gets approximately 33.3 US mpg. This is important to remember when comparing car specifications from different markets.
