Temperature Conversion Guide

Temperature is measured differently depending on where you are in the world and what you're doing. The Celsius scale (°C) is used in most countries for everyday weather and cooking. The Fahrenheit scale (°F) is used primarily in the United States. The Kelvin scale (K) is used in science and engineering, particularly in thermodynamics and astrophysics.

Converting between Celsius and Fahrenheit is one of the most common conversions on the internet. The formula is: °F = (°C × 9/5) + 32. Going the other way: °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9. Some useful reference points: water freezes at 0°C / 32°F, body temperature is 37°C / 98.6°F, and water boils at 100°C / 212°F at sea level.

Kelvin — The Absolute Temperature Scale

Kelvin is the SI base unit of temperature. Unlike Celsius and Fahrenheit, Kelvin has no negative values — 0 K (absolute zero) is the coldest possible temperature, at which all molecular motion stops. To convert Celsius to Kelvin, simply add 273.15. Room temperature (20°C) is 293.15 K. The surface of the sun is approximately 5,778 K.
