How to Add Fractions
To add two fractions, you first need to find a common denominator. Multiply the numerator and denominator of each fraction so they share the same bottom number, then add the numerators together. For example, 1/2 + 1/3: the common denominator is 6, so 1/2 becomes 3/6 and 1/3 becomes 2/6. Adding them gives 5/6.
How to Subtract Fractions
Subtracting fractions works the same way as addition — find a common denominator first, convert both fractions, then subtract the numerators. Always simplify the result to its lowest terms by dividing both the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor (GCD).
How to Multiply Fractions
Multiplying fractions is actually the simplest operation. Simply multiply the numerators together and the denominators together. For example, 2/3 × 3/4 = 6/12, which simplifies to 1/2. No common denominator is needed.
How to Divide Fractions
To divide fractions, multiply the first fraction by the reciprocal (the flipped version) of the second fraction. For example, 2/3 ÷ 4/5 becomes 2/3 × 5/4 = 10/12, which simplifies to 5/6.
